james albert chesney

James Albert Chesney (1824-1869) and Jane Findlay (1817-1893)

James and Jane were not married until 1853. They are listed as having one son, James E (1855-1930).

James Albert Chesney migrated with the Mississippi Saints without other family members in 1846 and spent the winter with them in Pueblo. It is not known how he came to join the Mississippi Saints but it is assumed that it probably happened while the Mississippi Saints were in Independence, MO, where they were joined by members of the Crow/Threlkel family from Illinois.

Brief Life History

James Albert Chesney was born in Cooper, MO. He joined the Mississippi Saints in Independence, MO in 1846, and wintered with them in Pueblo (now Colorado). He was part of the Robert Crow Company who left Pueblo April 17, 1846 and met Brigham Young's Vanguard at Ft. Laramie on June 1, 1847. He was with the advance company with Robert Crow and his family who went west ahead with Apostle Orson Pratt and entered the Great Salt Lake Valley July 22nd.

In March 1849, he was called to act as a counselor to Joseph Harker, president of the Priests' quorum in Salt Lake.  He was married in 1853 in Salt Lake. In 1861 he was called to settle in southern Utah. He and his family were among the other settlers  called to make a settlement in Meadow Valley, Washington County, Utah.
