The Robert Crow and George Washington Threlkel Families

The Robert Crow and George Washington Threlkel families joined the Mississippi Saints' families from Mississippi and Alabama in Independence, MO in June 1846, and traveled west with that company. For purposes of this website, the Crow and Threlkel families are therefore treated as part of the Mississippi Saints Company. Matilda Jane Crow married George Washington Threlkel in 1842, thus forming the association between the Crow and Threlkel families.

These families are the first to leave Pueblo on April 17, 1847, probably in company with mountain man Lewis B. Myers, and meet the advance company that was traveling west with Brigham Young on June 1, 1847. For more information on Lewis B. Myers, visit the Robert Crow page.

At the time that the Mississippi Saints migrated west, the Crow and Threlkel families consisted of 14 individuals, including: Robert Crow (father), Elizabeth Brown (mother), with their children John M., Benjamin B., Harriet Brunt (wife of Benjamin B.), Walter H., William P., Elizabeth J., Isa V., Ira M. and Matilda J. Threlkel (daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Crow and wife to George W. Threlkel), and George W. Threlkel (father), with children James W. and Milton H.

Milton Howard Threlkel, 1844-1847

George Washington Threlkel's son, Milton Howard Threlkel, tragically drowned in City Creek in Salt Lake City, Utah on 11 Aug 1847, under the age of three. Milton drowned just three days after his family reached the Salt Lake Valley, and he was the first burial at Utah's First Pioneer Burial Ground, which is now part of Old Deseret Village Pioneer Cemetery at Pioneer Trail State Park, according to Find a Grave.

The transfer of the remains of MIlton Howard Threlkel, along with those of 43 others, took place in 1986. As part of construction in downtown Salt Lake City, the remains of those buried in the First Pioneer Burial Ground were relocated to a newly created Pioneer Cemetery at This Is the Place Heritage State Park (see Boone, David F., "And Should We Die," BYU Religious Study Center):
