About the Mississippi Saints

Our Origins

In 1846, a group of southern members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Saints" or "the Church") gathered in Mississippi and headed northwest to join the main body of Saints along the Platte River. Known as the Mississippi Saints, this company traveled to Fort Laramie before they learned that the main body of Saints had not come west in 1846. The Mississippi Saints then traveled south and wintered in Pueblo Colorado where they were joined by three detachments of the Mormon Battalion. In 1847, many from these two groups returned to Fort Laramie where they joined Brigham Young and an advance body of Saints that entered the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. Visit the pages on this site to learn more about the Mississippi Saints and the families that composed this group.
